Route 27 Waltham Street Bridge over the Assabet River
Maynard, MA
Project Summary
The original concrete T-beam bridge was constructed in 1928 and after years of use, the load capacity was reduced due to its deteriorated condition. The replacement bridge is a 33.5 meter (110′) long single-span steel plate girder bridge supported by integral abutments on a single line of steel H-piles to maintain a HS25 capacity.
The associated roadway carries approximately 17,000 vehicles per day and 2 lanes of traffic. The bridge structure is situated between, and in close proximity to, two heavily traveled and congested intersections making the traffic management and planning a key component to the project’s success. Also included was permitting, a traffic management plan, roadway and drainage design and coordination with local businesses. Both lanes of traffic were maintained during the construction of the bridge.
