Christian Boisvert, PE, Hydraulic Engineer & Amateur Rugby Player
What drew you to Hoyle Tanner?
I really liked the size of the firm and the local office in Burlington, Vermont, which overlooks Lake Champlain and the Adirondack mountains. I was also impressed with the variety and amount of hydraulic engineering related projects that Hoyle Tanner does and was excited to jump in right away.
What is your favorite part of the company culture?
The Burlington office is a lot of fun. We are in the middle of a lunch break foosball tournament right now! Beyond that, I really appreciate that everyone is willing to pick up a call and talk through projects and tasks. It makes a big difference when you can collaborate so easily.
What is a lesson you have learned from a colleague, or the best professional advice you have ever received?
A former coworker used to ask me regularly whether I was still learning at my job. That question has stuck with me as I’ve progressed in my career. I push myself to keep improving and to take on challenges even when the answers aren’t clear.
What is one thing you wish people knew about your job?
Sounds cliche but that every day is different. One day me and a coworker are trying to decipher 100-year-old bridge plans to figure out foundation depth for a bridge scour analysis; another day, I am going out on site to look at washed-out bridges that were damaged in Vermont floods for a proposal. My job keeps me on my toes and engaged every day.
What did you want to be when you were growing up, or how did you get on the path you are on?
Younger me had an unrealistic dream of being a professional hockey player, but that obviously didn’t work out. So, I always knew I was into math, science, problem solving, and the outdoors. Civil and environmental engineering seemed like the perfect pathway to keep solving technical problems while occasionally spending time outside during the workday.
