The Augusta Memorial Bridge is an 11 span, 2,092′ long bridge built in 1949 that carries US Routes 201 and 202 and State Route 100 over the Kennebec River. This fracture critical structure consists of five continuous cantilevered, riveted Pratt truss deck spans; five built-up, riveted steel girder spans; and one rolled steel beam multi-beam span. Recent rehabilitations in 2006 and 2012 included replacement of the deck with a 5-3/16” thick half-filed steel grid deck with 1” thick lightweight concrete overfill and repainting of the entire structure.
Our inspection team, with support from Mistras Ropeworks, performed a hands-on inspection of the entire bridge superstructure and substructure above the waterline. The inspection was completed utilizing a combination of a man-lift over overland portions of the bridge and SPRAT certified rope access technicians on the remaining portions of the bridge. The inspection was completed with no interruptions to pedestrian, vehicular or boat traffic on or below the bridge. A complete inspection report was prepared for the inspection including FHWA Element Level condition ratings.
