Our mission to make a positive impact on communities includes both professional and non-professional efforts. Annually, we aim to support, invest in, and promote the growth of the communities where we live and work. As we reflect on 2024, we celebrate both the personal and professional accomplishments and achievements, and everything good in between – like our volunteering efforts! We are proud of the dedication and time our professionals have given to causes they care about. (Read more about the organizations we supported in 2023.)
In 2024, we dedicated over 290 hours to volunteer work – an impressive 161-hour increase from 2023 not including the efforts off the clock. Check out our Charitable Giving page to learn more about our Volunteer Time Off Program. Here are some of the organizations we volunteered with this year!
STEM Camp at MCC
This summer, two of our engineers workshopped with middle school students for Manchester Community College’s Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) Summer Camp. The camp helps students learn about and experience 21st-century skills in STEM. Through hands-on learning, our engineers worked with the students to understand civil engineering as a career. That included the day-to-day as well as the big picture of our impact on the natural and built environment.
Engineers in Action (EIA)
Senior Structural Engineer Kayla Hampe traveled to Tipa K’asa, Bolivia to build a pedestrian bridge over Rio Caine river so the citizens could travel safely. Prior to Kayla’s build trip with EIA, these community members had to use an aging cable car pulled hand-over-hand more than 325’ across heavy-flowing water to get to work. The pedestrian bridge that the team built with local help ended up being 107 meters long, and the community was thrilled to have a safe, new way to get around.
Merrymac Farm Sanctuary
Our Vermont team volunteered at The Merrymac Farm Sanctuary again – feeding the lambs and baby goat (kid), cleaning and prepping food, taking the goats and sheep out for enrichment, grooming horses, and building structures for the chicks. The sanctuary has multiple chicks that are too small to be with the other chickens yet and previously, when they would put the chicks out, the pigs would break into their day coops to steal food. The crew worked on pig proofing an existing structure and creating a new one! The chicks are now able to safely enjoy some time in the grass during the day before being brought in at night. The rescue animals all come from different backgrounds ranging from animals that got too big for the home, to high neglect/abuse cases. Explore the highlights on Facebook or LinkedIn.
Darbster Rescue
This year, members of our team helped out at the shelter and spent time with the dogs and cats. They fed the animals and took them outside for walks and play time. Volunteering at the shelter helps the animals receive the level of care and compassion that they deserve. Darbster’s mission is to ensure that each animal rescued experiences the best possible environment while they await their forever homes, and we were happy to help with that endeavor!
Habitat for Humanity
In November, a group of our professionals partnered with Habitat for Humanity Volunteer Opportunities for a build day in Bedford, Massachusetts! Our crew helped renovate a home for a family in need and learned new skills along the way. Check out our video on LinkedIn!
NH Food Bank Mac Off
As part of Hunger Awareness Month, our team participated in the annual “Mac Off Competition” at the NH Foodbank. This is a fun event where teams of 10 people from area companies get together and pack macaroni and cheese meals for families in need. Our team packed a total of 864 mac and cheese meal bags which will create approximately 5,184 meals.
UMass Lowell Senior Capstone Project Final Presentations
The Senior Capstone project for most engineering students is a chance to experiment and showcase all that they’ve learned in their undergraduate education. It’s a year-long culminating experience where civil and environmental engineering students collaborate on a “real world” design project and present it before graduating. Sometimes, an engineering team will get mentored by current engineers, and some of our professionals are actively involved during this critical time! For the past few years, different members of our team have been helping students at various campuses. Check out Structural Engineer Katelyn Welch’s recount of her experience helping University of New Hampshire students in 2022.
Baby DJ’s Christmas Toy Drive Program
Every year, our Florida team volunteers as a group to help local communities. This year, they are going to be volunteering with Baby DJ’s Christmas Toy Drive, where they will assist in sorting toys, toy pickup, and anything else the charity may need. Stay tuned for photos after they volunteer on the 18th!
