I-95 Taylor River Bridge Replacement & Dam Reconstruction
Project Summary
Hoyle Tanner provided bridge, highway, and dam engineering services and associated environmental services for the replacement of the existing bridge carrying I-95 over the Taylor River.
Tasked with assisting NHDOT to advance the preliminary plan through the final design process, this project presented challenges in environmental compliance. The project required coordination with key stakeholders, including New Hampshire Department of Environmental Services, the Towns of Hampton and Hampton Falls, NH Fish & Game and the US Wildlife. The project included replacement of the bridge with associated roadway approach and traffic control with continued study of the dam and fishway alternatives.
A unique highway aspect of the design was the development of a four-lane median diversion used by northbound and southbound traffic during the construction phasing to minimize traffic disruptions. Bridge design included replacement of the existing 18′ span concrete slab structure with a 74′ span NEXT Beam superstructure on by pile-supported stub abutments.
The technical challenges associated with environmental, permitting, hydrologic, hydraulic, sediment transport, dam replacement and geotechnical aspects of the project required expert evaluation, coordination and implementation.
