Meet Allyson Kitchens – Surveying Intern & Lifelong Learner

What’s something invaluable you’ve learned here?

I wouldn’t say that I have learned one single thing that is invaluable, because I have learned a lot working as a surveying intern, but I have learned that when you find something you love, it no longer becomes work. I love what I do and I love that I continue to learn more each and everyday.

What’s your favorite time of year to work at Hoyle Tanner & why?

I was employed at the start of summer, so I would say that is my favorite time to work at Hoyle Tanner. Working outside definitely comes with its ups and downs during the summer. I enjoy working out in the sun and love being surrounded by nature, however, the humidity does kill on somedays. Getting to work outside doing what I love makes it all worth it though.

What’s the coolest thing you are working on & why?

We are continuously working on different projects but I would say my favorite project that I have worked on was right in Concord – a client came to us looking to subdivide the two homes that she owned, and I got to work on it from the deed research right to the end of the actual survey.

What’s the best thing that’s happened to you recently (this week, this month, this year)?

In May, I graduated from NHTI with my associates degree and will be continuing my education in the fall at UMaine in Orono.

How many different states have you lived in?

I have lived in two states, New Hampshire and Rhode Island.

If you could only eat one meal for the rest of your life what would it be?

If I could eat one meal for the rest of my life I would have to say cheeseburgers.

What kind of pet do you have & how did you choose to name it?

I have one cat and two dogs, I am not sure how my cat goes her name, I think one of my other sisters picked it out. Her name is Kali. I think my mom picked out my first dogs name when she adopted him, his name was Jaguar, she named him Curtis. My second dog got her name Bella as a compromise between my younger sister and I, she wanted to name her Bellatrix from Harry Potter, I did not, so we settled on Bella. My dad wanted to name her Zeke – he got overruled.

What is a fun or interesting fact about your hometown?

A fun fact about Concord is that the State House was completed in 1819 and it remains the oldest U.S. state capitol wherein the legislature meets in its original chambers.

What are three things still left on your bucket list.

1) Watch the sunrise from Cadillac mountain

2) Parachuting

3) Travel to Italy

What characteristic do you admire most in others?

The characteristic that I admire most in others is passion. Watching someone’s eyes light up as they are talking about something that they love, it just gives me joy.

How old is the oldest item in your closet?

I have one of my grandmothers sweatshirts from the 1980s, it has a couple of stains but you would never guess that it was from the 80s.

Words to live by? Favorite quote? Why?

“Better an oops than a what if.” I’d rather take that trip, make the memories, make that mistake and learn from it than think back and wonder what it would have been like if I had just done it. This kind of goes hand in hand with the quote “You miss 100% of the shots you don’t take.” If you’re not willing to risk it, make that mistake, take that shot, you will forever be living your life in the ‘what if’ rather than just living life.
