We are excited to support Millinocket Airport as they move to the construction phase of their runway. Our goal is to ensure that the construction process is as smooth and efficient as possible, while addressing the unique challenges posed by the site and the project’s scope. (Learn more about the planning and design phases of this project here.)
Timeline to Construction
We are currently in the advanced stages of design, with plans to go out to bid early next year. The construction is scheduled to begin in the latter half of 2026, contingent on FAA’s grant award schedule, which typically occurs in August. Given the short construction season in New England, we anticipate that the project will be completed by summer 2027.
Technical Specs
One of the primary tasks during construction will be the extension and reconstruction of the main runway, Runway 11/29. This involves extending the runway from 4,713’ to 5,001’, which will require significant earthwork to fill in areas where the terrain drops off. This is crucial to ensure that the safety areas are brought up to grade to protect aircraft in the event of an overrun. Additionally, the existing pavement will be torn up, recycled to make gravel, and repaved to replace the 30-year-old existing pavement.
Another important aspect of the construction is the reconfiguration of the taxiway system. We will be removing the intersection of the runways to comply with the FAA’s new safety standards. This will involve shortening the crosswind runway by 800′ and reconfiguring the taxiways to reduce back taxiing, which is a safety issue as it involves aircraft being on an active runway. The new taxiway layout will streamline operations and make it easier for the airport to manage snow removal and other ground activities.
Environmental Awareness
Throughout the construction phase, we will be closely monitoring the progress and ensuring that all work is done to meet technical specifications. This includes addressing any environmental concerns, such as wetlands that may be impacted by the runway extension. We are committed to sustainability and will be reusing materials, such as repurposing the existing pavement as sub-base for the new construction. This not only helps reduce waste but also supports the town’s environmental goals. The airport will also be looking into the feasibility of replacing incandescent runway lights with energy-efficient LED lights.
Considerations for Closures
We understand that the construction process will require careful coordination to minimize downtime for the airport. Preliminary phasing suggests that we may start with the west end of the runway in fall 2026 and complete the remainder of the reconstruction in 2027. This approach aims to reduce the impact on airport operations and ensure that the airport can continue to serve its users effectively.
Overall, the construction phase of the Millinocket Airport project is a testament to our commitment to enhancing the airport’s infrastructure and supporting the town’s economic revitalization. We are excited to see this project come to fruition and look forward to the positive impact it will have on the community.
