Taxiway A Construction
Project Summary
Hoyle Tanner led the design and construction inspection for the rehabilitation of Taxiway A at Witham Field in Stuart, FL. This $6.14 million project included comprehensive updates to the taxiway’s pavement, energy-efficient LED lighting installation, and upgraded signage to enhance both safety and operational efficiency. To address the degradation of pavement surfaces, which can pose significant hazards to aircraft maneuverability and operational integrity, the project incorporated eco-friendly materials and advanced technologies. The use of energy-efficient LED lighting systems was a key feature, significantly improving visibility while reducing energy consumption and maintenance needs. By recycling the existing limerock base material to be used as part of the new 6-inch-thick base, in accordance with FAA requirements, the project minimized environmental impact and reduced costs, cutting CO2 and N2O emissions by at least 80%.
The sustainable practices adopted in this project also included on-site recycling, which helped reduce traffic, road wear, fuel consumption, and emissions. This approach not only preserved natural resources but also expedited project completion, reducing disruption to airport operations. The new lighting system, featuring LED lights along the taxiway edges and Runway Guard Lights at two hot spot areas, enhances pilot and ground staff awareness, reducing the chances of runway incursions. LEDs, known for their durability to vibration and extreme temperatures, have a longer lifespan than traditional bulbs, resulting in fewer replacements and less waste over time. The project demonstrates Hoyle Tanner’s commitment to ensuring the long-term functionality and environmental responsibility of this crucial taxiway.
