We are proud to announce that Hoyle Tanner, along with our team members from Sanborn Head and Watershed Consulting Associates, has been honored with a 2025 Merit Award from the American Council of Engineering Companies (ACEC) of Vermont for our work on the Pomerleau and Chittenden Housing Trust (CHT) 3‑Acre Stormwater Management Project. The award was presented in the Waste, Storm Water and Water Resources category as part of ACEC Vermont’s annual Engineering Excellence Awards program.

Pomerleau site during constructionThe Engineering Excellence Awards recognize projects that demonstrate an exceptional degree of innovation, complexity, and value to the public. Our award-winning project was completed in collaboration with Pomerleau Real Estate, CHT, the City of Burlington, and the Chittenden County Regional Planning Commission. It was selected for its contribution to improving water quality and addressing one of Vermont’s most pressing environmental challenges. Because of challenging site conditions such as substantial elevation changes and underlying bedrock as well as limited buildable area, this design took an innovative approach, setting a new benchmark for stormwater management in Vermont.

Located in Burlington’s South End, the project represents a significant investment in the health of Potash Brook and Lake Champlain. In addition to helping our clients comply with Vermont’s 3-Acre Rule, the design supports long-term environmental sustainability by capturing and treating stormwater runoff from highly developed areas. The success of this project reflects the strength of our partnerships and the expertise of our stormwater professionals, who continue to deliver forward-thinking solutions for clean water across the region.

Upon full operation, the Pomerleau and CHT  gravel wetland will act as a model for stormwater management across Vermont. Its collaborative model pairing private property owners with environmental leadership demonstrates how infrastructural upgrades can protect waterways while allowing ongoing site use.
