NHDOT On-Call Task: Brentwood Road Safety Audit
Project Summary
The Highway Safety Improvement Program (HSIP) is a federal-aid funding program aimed to achieve significant reduction in traffic fatalities and serious injuries on all public roadways. Through a data-driven process to identify high crash locations, NHDOT employs these funds to perform Road Safety Audits (RSAs) and determine cost effective improvements to improve safety for all modes of travel. NHDOT selected Hoyle Tanner to assist local municipalities.
These included projects on NH 28 in Chichester, US 202 in Jaffrey, and NH 75 in Milton, Dracut Road in Hudson, NH 236 in Somersworth, NH 16 in Wakefield, and NH 125 in Brentwood. Our team’s design efforts included coordinating and leading the RSA field meetings with stakeholders, identifying potential improvement measures, preparing conceptual alternatives, developing cost estimates, determining cost/benefit ratios using the Highway Safety Manual (HSM), preparing a study document of near-, intermediate-, and long-term improvements, and highlighting funding sources.
Through the process, our engineers and safety experts have helped to identify concerns with travel speeds, intersection sight distance, lack of auxiliary lanes, existing signage, and horizontal and vertical alignment. Working with NHDOT, our team has developed effective improvement alternatives to address these safety concerns and has delivered the RSA reports on-time and under budget. We are excited to help these communities take the next step towards improving their roads and intersections.
