Meet Jenae Carraway, PE – Senior Transportation Engineer & Seeker of the Perfect Pastry

What drew you to Hoyle Tanner?

When I was interviewing last year, I talked to close to a dozen different companies and Hoyle Tanner really stood out for the respect they show their employees in offering a lot of support for career growth while also promoting a healthy work/life balance. It’s also only two miles from my house so it’s really hard to beat a five minute commute that I can easily bike in the summer if I don’t mind one huge hill…

What did you want to be when you were growing up?

When I was in preschool, my family got a new roof put on our house which I thought was pretty cool so I told everyone I was going to be a “roofer.” Although I’m not actually employed as a “roofer,” I have installed a roof on a new house while volunteering my time building houses for Habitat for Humanity in the Greater Portland Area. I also make excuses for other fun carpentry projects around the house which my daughter (who is 6) helps me with so it’s pretty much mission accomplished.

How do you like to unwind after a busy day at work?

Anything active and game nights! I’m currently training to do my first sprint triathalon so trying to log a lot of time swimming/running/biking. I also love playing any board game ranging from Sleeping Queens with my daughter to Lords of Waterdeep and Smallworld.

What’s your go-to lunch or lunch spot?

Through word of mouth or food rumor channels, I have created my own google map layer for food places I want to try all across Maine (with a particular side goal of finding an amazing pastry). Anytime I’m in a random area and need some food, I find the closest place on my map. My current favorite lunch spot by the office is Magno Terra Café, which is aptly named since it’s in the same building as Eartha, the world’s largest rotating globe.

What’s a hobby you have outside of work?

Hiking and camping! I’m currently trying to complete all of the 4,000 footers in Maine and New Hampshire (and hopefully the rest of the northeast as well). Last summer, I was able to hike the southern Presidentials and my daughter is asking to summit Mt. Washington with me this summer.

Words to live by? Favorite quote? Why?

I’ve always liked the quote “You’re unique, just like everyone else.” I feel it really sums up the catch-22s of life in that everyone has their own personality, talents, and interests but, in the end, our basic needs and even wants tend to be the same.
