Intern Spotlight: Ava GoyetteMeet Ava Goyette – Ground Transportation Intern & Big-City Dreamer

What drew you to Hoyle Tanner?
I was drawn to Hoyle Tanner because of its strong company culture and values. The internship program seemed like a great opportunity to develop new skills while gaining hands-on experience in the civil engineering field. After interviewing with Jon Olin and Kelly LaVigne, I knew this was where I wanted to be. They gave me a genuine sense of the supportive and positive community that defines Hoyle Tanner, and that really stood out to me.

What’s your favorite part of the company culture or something invaluable you’ve learned here?
One of my favorite things about Hoyle Tanner is how collaborative and welcoming everyone is. Over the past two summers, I’ve had the opportunity to work with people across many disciplines, including bridge, highway, and construction management. Every person I’ve worked with has been eager to help and share their knowledge.

This summer, I took on a new role managing submittals for the Bolton Valley and Brighton Wastewater Treatment Facilities. Working directly with subconsultants and contractors gave me valuable insight into how projects come together and showed me a different side of the engineering process. It has been a great learning experience and has expanded my understanding of the industry.

What’s a lesson you’ve learned from a colleague or what’s the best piece of professional advice you’ve ever received?
Be confident, ask questions, and take initiative. One of the most important lessons I’ve learned is to try tackling a challenge on my own first, while also recognizing that it’s okay to ask for help when I need it. Some of my biggest learning moments have come from asking questions and learning from those around me. I’ve also learned that taking initiative can open doors to new opportunities. Reaching out and expressing interest in projects has allowed me to gain experience in areas I might not have otherwise explored.

What’s the best thing that’s happened to you recently (this week, this month, this year)?
My college lacrosse team made it to our league playoffs for the first time in my career!

What did you want to be when you were growing up?
My dream was to go on American Idol, make it big, and become a famous singer!

What is one thing still left on your bucket list?
One thing on my bucket list is to move to a big city and experience a completely new environment. I’d love the opportunity to explore a different lifestyle, meet new people, and challenge myself outside of my comfort zone.
