Meet Mia Dischiavo – Environmental Engineering Intern & Amateur Baker
What drew you to Hoyle Tanner?
My goal when I started college was to have a variety of different internships. Before this summer, I’d interned doing municipal drinking water work and also as an environmental health and safety intern for a large manufacturer. I was looking to work for a firm this summer, and the wastewater work Hoyle Tanner does caught my eye!
What’s something invaluable you’ve learned here?
I’ve learned how helpful it is to be out in the field, seeing the projects you’re working on in person. These systems look much different when you’re standing next to them than they do on paper, and the repeated exposure has helped me connect the pieces in my mind.
What’s your favorite time of year to work at Hoyle Tanner & why?
Well as a summer intern, I have to say summer. It’s been so great to be out in the field with such nice weather!
What’s the best thing that’s happened to you recently (this week, this month, this year)?
I went on a study abroad trip to Costa Rica this past winter. We learned about different renewable energy sources, agroforestry, monoculture, and ecotourism. It was an incredible, and super immersive, learning experience!
How many different states have you lived in?
Two, New York and Vermont!
If you could only eat one meal for the rest of your life, what would it be?
Sushi for sure.
What is a fun or interesting fact about your hometown?
There are 17 other Uticas in the U.S. and all of them are named after Utica, NY – where I’m from.
What are three things still left on your bucket list.
I mainly want to travel, at the top of my list right now are Greece, Iceland, and Spain.
What characteristic do you admire most in others?
Open mindedness.
What did you want to be when you were growing up?
When I was really little, I used to say I wanted to be an animal rescuer like the cartoon Diego.
