University of Massachusetts Amherst

UMass Central Core Landscape Improvement Project

Amherst, MA

Project Summary

Hoyle Tanner served as prime engineering firm for the $30 million Central Core Landscape Improvements Project at the University of Massachusetts Amherst.

Hoyle Tanner worked with the University to enhance the central core portion of the campus through the reestablishment of historical Ellis Way. A landmark of the University, Ellis Way was originally a tree-lined roadway running through the heart of the campus that was lost over time due to rapid development in the area. The new Ellis Way redefines the original route through a 20’ wide pedestrian corridor accented with brick pavers, interconnecting sidewalks, new trees, plantings, overall landscaping, benches and architectural lighting.

As part of the design, Hoyle Tanner incorporated utility upgrades, drainage improvements, ADA ramp design, analysis of the existing ADA code compliance, structural analysis of the existing parking garage for new utility connections, structural design of stream tunnels and vaults, waterproofing and repairs for a subterranean parking garage and building life safety analysis to ensure safety during construction.

Utility upgrades included new steam and condensate return lines inside and within the buildings, steam air bypass and vent upgrades, new potable water line and service replacements, reclaimed water services, sewer line replacement and manhole upgrades, new electrical ductbanks and vaults, and new telecom ductbanks.
