Riverwalk Park, Parking Lot & Pedestrian Bridge Grove Street
Riverwalk Park, Parking Lot & Pedestrian Bridge Grove Street
Hoyle Tanner was retained by the Town of Peterborough to find an innovative solution to the need for additional parking in the downtown area for shops and businesses. With limited space downtown, Hoyle Tanner looked at options to the south of Town along the Nubanusit Brook and Contoocook River. Hoyle Tanner designed a new 60-space parking lot in an undeveloped parcel of land located in close proximity to Peterborough’s downtown area. All vehicles access the new parking facility via a new driveway connecting to Grove Street. The parking lot features two drive aisles with double stack parking on each side. The north end of the parking lot features a drop-off/turnaround to allow for continuous vehicle circulation, enhanced maneuverability, and a staging area to be used for farmer’s markets. Stormwater is treated with rain gardens and a large underground infiltration chamber system.
An 8′ wide pedestrian bridge was constructed across the Nubanusit Brook to provide connectivity and continuity from the new parking lot to the downtown area. Concrete sidewalks were also constructed from Grove Street along the access drive and parallel to the parking lot to connect the parking with the pedestrian bridge. A new landscaped seating area was constructed between the parking facility, the Contoocook River and the pedestrian bridge to create a park-like feel to provide an area for recreation and for users to enjoy the views of the surrounding waterways.
